OBITUARY FOR MALCOLM BOLES
Posted on Thursday, 8 April 2010, 4:45 p.m. by Caroline Geelen

Many of you will remember Malcolm’s gracious presence in the club over the last 15 or so years - a valued committee member, coach, mentor and Life Member of the Auckland Archery Club. Sadly, he passed away Tuesday, 16th February.

Dennis Cooper, current committee member, has perhaps put into words better than any others of us could:

A Salute to Malcolm Boles.

Malcolm was there, along with Andy Lindsay, on that Saturday in May 1998, when my son Vaughn and I first came to archery at One Tree Hill. It was Malcolm’s warmth, humour, his obvious intelligence and depth of attention, his devotion, that attracted our initial commitment.

Through the years, he was unparalleled as a gentleman about the Clubrooms and never ceased to inspire and encourage. He contributed enormously at every level, on the range, around the Committee table, on tasks, socially. He maintained standards, both personal and in archery, by example.

He was an absolute winner with both my two (then) young ones. He earned, held and never lost the deep respect of us all. A stalwart and an anchor, who we will truly miss.

Rest in peace, Malcolm. Tau Tuakana.

Dennis, Bev, Vaughn and Danika Cooper

The Arrow and the Song - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I shot an Arrow into the air

It fell to earth I know not where,

For so swiftly it flew, the sight

Could not follow it in its flight.

I breath'd a Song into the air

It fell to earth, I know not where.

For who has sight so keen and strong

That it can follow the flight of a song?

Long, long afterward in an oak

I found the Arrow still unbroke;

And the Song from beginning to end

I found again in the heart of a friend.
